Hindsight Is 2020

Look to the past to discover upcoming trends. Maximalism and the use of color is making a come back!

Classic Blue has been named the Pantone color of the year for 2020. Blue has been the “it” color for awhile and it doesn’t look like that will be changing anytime soon. Blue paired with white and neutrals has been the recent trend. Blue and white oriental style porcelain jars were all the rage! However, in 2020 blue will be paired with colors like aqua, terra-cotta, olive green and persimmon.

Maximalism does not mean over consumption or living with too much stuff. It simply means ramping up your style a bit by expressing your personality in your environment. In fact, maximalism favors antiques and unique second-hand finds that add personality and character without sacrificing sustainability. This pleases the millennials and minimalists while offering options for those who are tired of looking like everyone else.

Putting together a home filled with light wood and neutrals with accents of black--like we have been bombarded with over the last several years is simple. Maximalism is a bit more challenging. Creating the right mix of modern and old, layering textures and patterns and knowing when to draw the line is tricky. However, if you get it right, you will have a unique and intriguing abode that is completely your own.

And— The best thing about maximalism is that it will never go out of style. Especially if you stay true to who you are when making your selections.

Here are six tips on getting it right:

  1. Loosely follow a color scheme; This helps you find a direction. However, don’t get too matchy-matchy. Use variations of value within each color.

  2. Use wallpaper sparingly; Wallpaper is a great way to add personality and oomph to a space. However, if overused it can look messy and chaotic. Consider using it on the backs of bookshelves or inside drawers.

  3. Take a few chances; Maximalism is all about the unexpected.

  4. Pay attention to the details; Trim some of your pillows and lamp shades with tassels or fringe.

  5. Mix patterns; Try putting a different fabric on the backs or seats of your chairs and go crazy with throw pillows.

  6. Lastly….. have fun. Maximalism is certainly not meant to be boring!
